This was it. I was up to pledge after Raven Queen, ready to proclaim what my sisters had already said before me. I, Mary Danser, would pledge to follow my destiny in the Twelve Dancing Princesses. The third eldest out of twelve, I naturally felt like my pledge was unimportant. After all, my sister Pia had already done it. Wasn’t that pledge enough? Did I really have to go up there and proclaim to follow a destiny that really had nothing to do with me? My eyes followed Raven as she stepped forward; I’d heard mumblings of rebellion, which had caused a flutter in my heart. What if I didn’t have to attempt to dance all night?

The sound of a crashing piano alerted him to Sammi's eternal presence in her room; even though Leah had given him the couch, as that was the best they'd had, he still found himself unable to sleep knowing Sammi was still awake.
